The Power of a Team: Insights from the TRS Build Retreat

Greetings from TRS Build!
We recently gathered for our annual retreat where we bring the team together for two days to refocus and reinforce our commitment to client experience and quality in product and service delivery.
This year’s retreat was particularly insightful as we delved into the theme of "The Power of a Team" and its profound impact on how we support our clients to achieve the beauty and functionality they are seeking with their remodel, home addition, or custom home. Much of the two-day session is also spent working together to continually improve our processes and procedures; and of course, what retreat could be complete without taking some time to celebrate our progress and the contributions each person has made to it.
Reflecting on Our Retreat Agenda:
- Building a Foundation of Trust: Every year we take advantage of our retreat to discuss our Mission, Vision and Values as an organization, and how they can best be reflected in the work we do every day. As part of this we discuss the importance of trust; trust within our team, trust between our team and our clients, and trust between our team and our tradespeople. Trust isn’t just a word at TRS Build; it’s something we strive for in every interaction, from the office to the construction site. We are very proud of our team, that we can trust each person to bring their best every day, and to deliver that in turn to our clients.
- Fostering Communication: Effective communication is a topic that cannot be, well, over communicated! We discussed the importance of communication in building on our first topic - trust. From communicating options during the design process to communicating progress during construction and collecting client feedback all along the way. Over the years we have continually refined on (and added to) our communication channels and processes to do our best to ensure we are both communicating proactively and asking for feedback at critical times during the project.
- Embracing Diversity and Innovation: During our retreat, we celebrated the diversity within our team, our contractor base, and our clients. We are so grateful to get to work with (and learn together with) so many different people and perspectives! Seeking out and embracing different perspectives has been essential for our growth and development as a company, enriching our solutions and internal culture by listening to the perspectives of others and seeing how we can leverage these ideas to create value for our team and clients. and ensure that every client receives a tailored approach that meets their unique needs.
- Continuous Learning and Development: Learning is a lifelong journey and being in the custom home building and remodeling business provides ample opportunities for learning on a daily basis! Whether it be new tools, technologies, expertise in design and construction, industry and market trends, and best practices for customer service and contractor relations, there really is something new to learn every day. Not many of our clients get to see how passionate our team is about learning and improving, sharing what they have learned with the rest of the team, and engaging discussion on how we can use our knowledge to improve product and service delivery.
- Embracing Each Individual: A great team is made up of individuals and we couldn’t be more proud of our team and trades. This year we celebrated each individual on our team by sharing our Enneagram results focusing on the strengths each person brings. We also were excited to provide a barbecue for our core team to have social time with the tradespeople who work so hard to deliver on our commitment to create the beauty and functionality our clients seek for their homes and businesses.

My husband (who is also my business partner, apparently we truly can’t get enough of each other!) frequently says that we will become like the five people we spend the most time with, that we are shaped by the environment we choose to immerse ourselves in, and more importantly, the people in that environment. I think the same is true of our companies. That is why at TRS Build we choose to surround ourselves with fellow members of the National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI) . I was reminded of that this month during our Austin NARI Builder and Developer Roundtable meeting where I had the opportunity to engage with like-minded business owners, exchange ideas on what is working best to deliver to our clients, employees, and tradespeople, and I could personally share from our SERVICE value focus and the importance of trust and remaining trustworthy to our clients and team. We choose to spend time with other NARI members because they run reputable businesses, provide amazing results, and like ourselves, invest in knowing other reputable contractors and finding opportunities for us to learn from one another. Each of our companies is different in our value proposition and project focus, but we are all the same in our drive to raise the bar on customer experience and affirm the trust we have established over years or even decades of delivering to homeowners in and around Austin.
